How Rock 'n' Roll Ruined an Evening

Actually, it didn't ruin our evening. But it did piss us off. Last night, I had a craving for Mexican food (it had probably been over a week since we had it last) so we scooted over the Monica's for some really good carnitas tacos and some so-so fajitas (note - don't get fajitas at Monica's, there's tons more on the menu that's better). Our margaritas hit the spot and we went home in good moods, ready to watch some Thursday night TV.

We realized 30 Rock wasn't a rerun (the writer's strike won't get us down) and we watched as Kenneth tried to show the gang the true meaning of Christmas (BTW, a Ludachristmas party has nothing to do with the true meaning of Christmas). And after that, they showed an SNL collage of all 'funny' Christmas skits. They left out Hanukkah Harry, so it obviously wasn't the best sketches. But halfway through SNL, we both heard some banging and screaming, but not in a domestic disturbance way, more in a rock concert way. It was so loud we couldn't believe it. We went outside and tried to figure out where the music was coming from. Surprisingly, it didn't come from Deep Ellum, but closer to Live Oak and Exall Park (click here to view neighborhood)We both conceded that if it continued until 10:00, we would do something about it.

Now, for our friends that don't know, Tim and I have both had major issues with noise and loud neighbors for the past 3 years. At this point, we are not embarrassed to call the apartment management, complex security or even the police on anyone.

The musice actually died down for a while, but as we headed to bed, the thud of the bass vibrated through our walls once again. It was the bitter-sweet 'break'. The band took a break and we mis-took it for the end of the concert. Throughout the night, I was just absolutely baffled as to what could be going on. Who would hold a concert outdoors in December at night? Was it a radio station with a bad promotions director? Was it some jackass having his birthday party at Exall park? Whatever it was, we were sure it was breaking code and breaking code at 8:00 PM is one thing, but breaking code at 10:30 PM was quite another and we weren't going to stand for it. So we loaded in the truck to investigate and we could not believe what we discovered.

Just one block NW of our complex is a very quaint area of non-profit organizations. The 3x5 block area is filled with old victorian houses used as offices for the organizations and green parks for jogging and playgrounds. Click here to see the Wilson District. Click on the map and locate Swiss Avene and Liberty. This is where we found the culprit. As we drove up Liberty, we saw a beautiful light show of red and purple (I didn't have my glasses on). But as we got closer, we realized we were driving up to the back of the stage and as Tim turned the corner, we saw a Big Hair Medal cover band rocking out to Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name" to a group of maybe 15 women dressed as 80's rocker chicks dancing in front of the stage. We couldn't believe our eyes. Is this a charitable event? What are they doing here? Can you believe the sound is that loud and the stage is facing the opposite direction? The band and the audience could tell what we were doing. And as I said, "we're calling the police" and Tim turned the truck around, the lead singer pointed at the truck and sang, "You give love...a bad name!"

We got home and I dialed 911 and gave the lady all of the information. I hoped Dallas police didn't have too much on their plate on a Thursday night. I should have mentioned that if they went out there, they were sure to get some revenue because, as I said earlier, there was definitely some code breaking going on.

Unfortunately, it took about 30 more minutes before we didn't hear anymore bass and vibrations. But we'd like to think that we stuck it to the band trying to stick it to The Man. As I told Tim, you can stick it to The Man as long as it doesn't ruin our sleep.

Wow. That tops all your noisy neighbor stories. The location of their rock concert was so random!
